Help your child stay healthy and in shape by preparing a nutritional lunch. Instead of the traditional PB&J sandwich, pack an egg salad sandwich on whole wheat bread. Add variety to the lunch by replacing the usual fresh fruit with a piece of string cheese. The cheese is a good calcium source. Include a small fruit salad and a small bottle water to complete the lunch.

Make your own trail mix full of raisins, nuts and dried berries. A sandwich of lean deli meat, wheat bread, lettuce and tomatoes provides the child with a green vegetable, a fruit, whole grain and a lean meat serving.Never heard of this before? Get up to speed here. Use a light mayonnaise or mustard to make the sandwich moist. All natural juice drinks provide full flavor and limited calories.

Redo the PB&J sandwich. Peanut butter provides an excellent source of protein and energy. It is also available in crunchy, creamy and whipped. Use whole wheat crackers, flat bread, or whole wheat bread instead of regular white bread. Replace the traditional jelly with an all-natural 100 fruit spread or a low sugar, low calorie jelly for a healthier sandwich. Sending cut up fruit in a Ziploc bag is healthier and makes clean up easier.

In today’s time, moms are busier than ever. Even though fast food is the fastest way of feeding the family it is not the healthiest. Prevent weight gain and make sure the family is getting the recommended servings of healthy portions each day by preparing food ahead of time.

Prepare a salad using the recommended five colors of vegetables a day. When kept at the recommended temperature, the salad will last several days in the refrigerator. Prepare the dishes in glassware that has a lid. Once the meal is ready to be cooked, just remove the lid and stick the dish in the oven. The food can be stored in the refrigerator in the same airtight container for several days. This is a good idea for a mom who has little time for prepping and cooking food. Baking the meal is a healthy alternative to frying foods.

A slow cooker is an excellent way to cook a meal. It allows the meal to be cooked while mom is out of the house or doing other tasks around the house. For quick and convenient snacks on the go, cut up vegetables like carrot sticks and celery sticks and place them in a bag.

When recipes are formulated they are typically made for the cooking conditions at sea level. Most of the western United States and Canada are at high altitudes so they require some modification. The most important thing you will have to adjust is the cooking time. The boiling temperature is lower at higher altitudes so your cook time will need to increase slightly if you are boiling any part of your recipe. You will also need to reduce leavening agents such as baking powder and baking soda while also decreasing the amount of flour in the recipe. Make sure all pans are greased well as this will help in allowing the recipe to not rise too quickly. When using a deep fryer, it is very important to reduce the temperature of the oil by about 15 degrees. The outside may appear done, but this temperature decrease will ensure that your food is cooking thoroughly throughout. Most recipes do contain extra instructions for those that are cooking at higher altitudes so be sure to check the recipe and see if that information is available to you.Since glass baking pans do not conduct heat well, there is no need to increase any temperatures when using glass cookware.

Grocery stores can be a money pit these days especially when shopping for an entire family. There are several ways to save but we will highlight one in particular. It will prove to make a difference in your budget as well as free up time in your schedule.

Families are finding the need to budget spending extremely important while not wanting to find the pantry affected. Bulk grocery shopping has grown in popularity and stores providing bulk goods are popping up everywhere. This idea is perfect on all levels. The larger the quantity of groceries you purchase, the more you save. The more you save, the more you can purchase. And the more you purchase, the less you have to shop each month. It doesn’t take rocket science to realize that this idea of bulk shopping is a win win situation.

Stores offering bulk goods make shopping easy while providing everything a market offers but in a much larger scale. Whether you need produce, dairy, dry goods or meats, bulk shopping is the way to go. Keep in mind that with bulk shopping comes a need for more storage, refrigerator and freezer space so shop accordingly.

There is sometimes a membership fee involved but the money you will spend on that once a year fee cannot compare to the money you will save on bulk buying. Give it a try and see just how enjoyable shopping can be!If you like what you see, keep going: Grocery Store Lessons

Family Meal Planning – Can It Be Done With Family Input?
Planning family meals together should probably start from the time children are toddlers. While parents may know what their children like to eat, there’s also the issue of good nutrition to consider. It’s not really difficult to learn how to get the whole family involved in meal planning. It takes planning to get to meal planning. Carve out time when the family is most relaxed. Meal planning could begin when the main meal of the day is shared together and there isn’t a rush out the door.

Discuss Family Meal Planning To Create Menus For The Week Ahead
Preteens and older teens enjoy contributing their input to a weekly menu. Start by giving each family member a day or two of the week to implement their personal menu selections. This is actually good training for their college days when they need to clearly identify wholesome foods from junk food. Format menus so they include beverages, sides, entrees and desserts. Allow family to help shop for foods their menus require. Buy them a chef’s hat for their “Menu Day” and give them the opportunity to help prepare meals when possible.
